January 16-18 Ski Campout

SPACE AVAILABLE!

The ski campout has become an annual trip for the Troop.  We will be staying in heated cabins with indoor plumbing.
The general itinerary is

  • Jan 16 - Drive up to Camp Greilick and set up in the cabins.
  • Jan 17 - Ski for most of the day at Mt. Holiday in Traverse City with breaks for lunch and an excellent turkey dinner.
  • Jan 18 - Drive to Caberfae Peaks ski resort on Sunday and ski for most of the day, before driving home that evening.

The Troop has reserved 2 cabins which can hold from 20-25 people each.  But we must have a minimum of 25 people who sign up for the campout and pay the $20 reservation fee to cover the cabin costs.
Larry Vertel will start taking the $20
non-refundable deposits immediately with spaces held on a first paid, first reserved basis.
The $20 deposits must be received no later than the December 9th Troop meeting.

Pricing is on page 2 of the Permission slip HERE

In the past we have had scout families ask if they could bring other family members to take advantage of the lift ticket/equipment rental pricing.  As in the past the answer is yes, but the cabin lodging is reserved for the registered scout and their parent/guardian, so other family members may need to obtain their own lodging.  Space for other family members in the cabin will be determined based on availability and also the ability to provide any privacy to female attendees as the cabins are dormitory style.

If you have any questions, please contact Larry Vertel at (248) 542-8641.

Summer Camp July 12 - July 18 2009

At the 10/18 troop meeting the boys were presented with 3 options for summer camp. One was in Indiana, one was in Ohio and one was in Michigan. After a small presentation and some questions we followed the democratic process and took a vote. Camp Frontier in Pioneer, Ohio was the overwhelming choice. This camp had the most merit badges of all three, including a large number of badges required for the eagle rank. Like all scout summer camps it has a program focused on scouts advancing to the First Class Rank. In addition it had many interesting activities (Mt. Biking, Mt. Boarding, Water Ball, a large "blob" float in the swim area, a Human Foosball Court, Geocaching, etc.). This also is relatively close in that the camp is only 60 miles from Toledo.

Lastly we were able to reserve a campsite for our preferred date of July 12-July 18th, 2009.

For those of you who want to learn more about the camp, including watching it's promotional video the internet link is HERE

In the past the Troop has made every effort to keep summer camp costs in the $250-$275 range, usually falling closer to the $275 range. In researching summer camps this year we discovered that all camps costs are rising due to higher costs (food/propane, etc.) they are experiencing. That along with the unknown factor of gas prices has caused summer camp costs to be closer to $300, with some camps exceeding this amount. Although final costs are being determined, the maximum expected costs for scouts is $300. Once the paperwork is received from the camp I will send out the payment schedule including the amounts. But in the mean time, please reserve these dates for next year's troop 1610 Summer Camp.
